Travel Insurance Focus: Luggage and Personal Items Cover

Find out what’s covered by your COTA travel insurance plan if your luggage or personal items are stolen, accidentally lost or damaged when you’re travelling.

Throughout your travels, it can be very easy for your luggage and personal items to become stolen, accidentally lost or accidentally damaged.

With a travel insurance policy from COTA Insurance, our Standard Cover includes automatic cover for most of your luggage and personal items during your trip.

Examples of items we consider to be luggage include:

  • Clothing, coats and shoes
  • Personal electronics e.g. mobile phones, ipads and cameras
  • Toiletries and cosmetics
  • Sunglasses and prescription glasses
  • Your suitcase and carry-on luggage

Examples of items we do not consider to be luggage include things like gift cards, furniture, weapons, drones, collectibles and watercraft – please refer to page 19 of the PDS for the full list.

We also provide additional protection for your belongings with our New for Old Luggage optional cover and Winter Sports optional cover. Choosing either of these for an additional premium on your travel insurance plan can give you added peace of mind should something happen to your belongings while you are on holiday.

Standard Cover

The Standard Cover across all of our travel insurance plans provides cover for your luggage and personal items if something happens to them.

Each trip that you take has a limit that applies to all the claims you can make during your trip for standard luggage costs. This is a maximum limit that you can claim for all luggage expenses you incur on your holiday.

These are the Standard luggage limits your policy includes for expenses that are incurred when your luggage and personal items are stolen, accidentally lost or accidentally damaged

The tables below show the standard cover limits per trip and per primary traveller included in your policy.

PolicyStandard Luggage Cover , Trip Limit (per primary traveller)*Your luggage and personal items are delayed over 12hrs (per primary traveller)*
Comprehensive plan and Annual Frequent Traveller plan$12,000$250-500
Basic plan$3,000$250
Domestic plan$4,000$250-500

*Only primary travellers are used to calculate the trip limit for this expense. However, all travellers listed on your COI, including dependants, are covered under this limit.

Our standard cover also has an individual item limit, which is the maximum you can claim per item.

Item CategoryIndividual item limit  (per item)+
Mobile Phones$1,000
Medical Aids$1,000
Other Luggage+$700

+ The maximum amount we will cover jewellery for is $700 per item, up to a trip limit of $2100 for all claims you make under your policy for jewellery.

*Only primary travellers are used to calculate the trip limit for this expense. However, all travellers listed on your COI, including dependants, are covered under this limit.

Our standard limits provide you cover for the depreciated value of your luggage and personal items. This means that the age and wear and tear is deducted from the item’s original price to reflect its current market value. To be covered for the full item price of your, you will need to take out New for Old optional cover.

What We Mean by ‘Item’?

Generally an item is a single article or unit such as a mobile phone. However, items that come in sets such as a pair of earrings or a camera & lens will be considered one item, i.e. you can’t claim separately for each. However if you lose an additional item such as the matching bracelet or an extra camera lens, we’ll consider those to be separate items.

New for Old Optional Cover

Our New for Old optional cover can be taken out on individual items and needs to be selected at the time you buy your policy for an additional premium. Any items that you have selected for this cover become ‘specified items’ and are listed on your COI. You can add up to $10,000 of ‘specified items’ with a maximum of $4,000 for each item.

If any of your ‘specified items’ are stolen, accidentally lost or accidentally damaged there is cover for them up to the lesser of their original cost or specified value.

Sports and leisure equipment are not covered under standard cover. They can also be included into your policy with New for Old optional cover, however, they are not covered for accidental damage that occurs when they are ‘in use’.

Winter Sports Optional Cover

To ensure your winter sports equipment is covered, you will need to purchase the Winter Sports Option for an additional premium at the time you buy your policy. Your equipment will be covered up to its depreciated value and, as long as it is less than 3 years old, we will cover for accidental damage when the equipment is ‘in use’.
